Rays 10, Orioles 6: Matt Joyce recorded three hits and five RBIs, capped by a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the ninth inning as visiting Tampa Bay scored six times to rally past Baltimore.
Joyce also registered a two-run homer and an RBI double while Kelly Johnson started the ninth-inning outburst with a home run off Orioles closer Jim Johnson (1-4). Ben Zobrist tacked on a two-run double in the ninth to help Alex Torres (1-0) gain the victory after pitching four hitless innings.
Adam Jones knocked in three runs while Nick Markakis recorded three hits and an RBI for Baltimore, which lost for the first time in 110 games when leading after seven innings. Johnson gave up five runs on three hits and two walks to blow his second consecutive save for the Orioles after converting 35 straight.
Jones hammered a two-run homer to left field and Chris Davis followed immediately with a solo blast to center to cap a four-run first inning for Baltimore. Davis, Jones, Nate McLouth and J.J. Hardy each had a pair of hits for the Orioles.
The Rays pulled within 4-3 in the third on Yunel Escobar’s RBI double and a long two-run blast by Joyce to right field. Hardy ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the third and Jones pushed across another with a fielder’s choice in the fourth for a 6-3 edge and Baltimore led 6-4 going into the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hardy’s infield single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest for the team this season. … Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez lasted only two-plus innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, while Baltimore’s Jair Jurrjens allowed four runs on six hits over the first five innings in his season debut. … Tampa Bay C Jose Molina had two doubles before leaving with an apparent hamstring injury.
