Cardinals 4, Padres 0: Adam Wainwright struck out nine in a complete-game gem and Carlos Beltran drove in a pair of runs as St. Louis added to San Diego's road woes.
Wainwright (3-5) scattered four hits and walked one batter for his first complete game of the season and ninth career. The Padres couldn't muster any offense and fell to a major league-worst 4-12 on the road.
Matt Holliday had an RBI double and made a brilliant sliding catch in left to begin an inning-ending double play in the seventh. Daniel Descalso scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won two in a row after dropping eight of their previous 10 games.
The victory came at a price for injury-riddled St. Louis, which saw third baseman Matt Carpenter leave the game due to tightness in his right side. Carpenter injured himself as he exited the batter's box after hitting a double in the first inning.
Descalso took his place and scored after Beltran lined a fastball from Edinson Volquez (2-4) to right field for an RBI single.
Beltran doubled the advantage in the sixth inning after his fielder's choice allowed Descalso to score from third base. Tyler Greene did the same three batters later to bring around Holliday and give St. Louis a 3-0 advantage.
Holliday capped the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Making his 100th start of his career, Volquez yielded three runs on five hits and walked four in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cardinals improved to 3-6 in games that Wainwright starts this season. ... San Diego OF Mark Kotsay received a cortisone injection for his back injury. ... Padres 3B Chase Headley did not start due to what manager Bud Black termed "a lower-back issue." Headley had started all but one of the team's games this season prior to sitting out on Tuesday.
