Pirates 5, Rockies 4: Clint Barmes homered to tie it and Casey McGehee singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Pittsburgh defeated visiting Colorado.
Barmes, who came into the game 4-for-45 on the season, punished his former team with two doubles and the solo homer to left field off reliever Matt Belisle (1-1). McGehee’s winning hit came with two outs.
Andrew McCutchen knocked in three runs, including a two-run double that gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead in the seventh.
Carlos Gonzalez belted his first two homers of the season for the Rockies, both two-run blasts. His second homer, off reliever Tony Watson (1-0) in the eighth, gave Colorado a 4-3 lead.
Alex Presley also doubled twice for the Pirates and scored two runs. Joel Hanrahan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save in three chances.
Colorado starter Jamie Moyer allowed six hits and one run in six innings of work. The 49-year old got pinch hitter Josh Harrison to ground into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth to keep the Rockies up 2-1.
Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia, who missed his scheduled outing Saturday due to pain in his side, allowed four hits and two runs over six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh was batting .202 as a team coming into the day, last in the major leagues. … Gonzalez has nine RBIs. … The first game of the series was rained out Monday and will be made up with a doubleheader Wednesday. ... The Pirates have won four of their last six.
