Astros 7, Rockies 3: Lucas Harrell tossed seven scoreless innings and J.D. Martinez drove in three runs as host Houston evened its record at 1-1 with a victory over Colorado.
Martinez took a 1-1 pitch from Jamie Moyer deep over the wall in left for a two-run home run to give Houston a 3-0 lead in the fourth. He added an RBI single in the seventh to help Houston avoid a third straight 0-2 start.
Harrell (1-0) dominated the Rockies with his sinker, forcing 14 ground outs. The right-hander gave up only three hits and struck out four, with 16 of his 23 first pitches going for strikes.
Jordan Schafer led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run then scored Marwin Gonzalez from third on a squeeze play to put the Astros up 4-0 in the top of the fifth. Chris Snyder’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth extended the lead to five runs.
Rockies starter Jamie Moyer (0-1) failed to become the oldest pitcher to win a big-league game. At 49 years and 141 days old, Moyer allowed three earned runs on five hits – two of which were home runs – in five innings.
Free-agent signing Michael Cuddyer snapped the shutout with a solo home run to center field in the eighth inning. Cuddyer finished 2-for-3 and is 4-for-7 with two RBIs in his first two games as a member of the Rockies.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzalez recorded his first major-league hit with a single in the fifth. … Colorado committed three errors – two of those were throwing errors on the same play. … Chris Johnson scored from third on a passed ball in the eighth. …
