Angels 4, Twins 3: C.J. Wilson pitched 7 1/3 strong innings and Torii Hunter went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs as host Los Angeles won for the second time in eight games.
Chris Iannetta added a solo homer and Kendrys Morales had two hits and scored a run for the Angels, who struck first in a battle between two of the worst teams in the American League.
Disappointing Los Angeles (8-15) sits at the bottom of the AL West but has gotten a solid return on its investment in Wilson (3-2), who struck out four while yielding five hits and three runs Monday. The left-hander has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his five turns.
Wilson took a shutout into the eighth before hitting a batter and yielding back-to-back RBI hits. LaTroy Hawkins came on and allowed one inherited runner to score before Scott Downs recorded the final out and kept the Angels in the lead.
Downs stayed on for the ninth to record his second save.
Hunter got the Angels on the board in the first inning, pushing a single into left two batters after Albert Pujols had doubled off Nick Blackburn (0-3).
Hunter pushed it to 3-0 with a two-run blast in the fourth and Iannetta provided some key insurance with his third home run in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pujols finished 1-for-4, bringing his homerless streak to start the season to 92 at-bats. He is hitting .217. … The Twins (6-16) own the worst record in major league baseball. … The Angels elected to leave Downs in for the ninth instead of going to closer Jordan Walden, who has not pitched since blowing a save opportunity at Tampa Bay last week.
