Pirates 4, Tigers 1: A.J. Burnett pitched six scoreless innings, picking up his seventh victory in as many starts as Pittsburgh topped visiting Detroit.

Burnett (8-2) gave up just two hits in becoming the first Pirate to win seven consecutive starts since Dock Ellis in 1974. He walked three and allowed Tigers to reach third base in the first and sixth innings, but in both cases the right-hander retired Prince Fielder to end the threat.

Pittsburgh scored two runs in each of the first two innings.

Neil Walker had an RBI single in the first inning and came home when Garrett Jones grounded into a double play. A pair of Detroit errors on a sacrifice bunt by Burnett in the second inning allowed Pedro Alvarez and Rod Barajas to score.

Doug Fister (1-4) allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out seven. Two of the runs against him were unearned, but it was his throwing error, along with another on the same play by Detroit left fielder Delmon Young, that sparked Pittsburgh’s second inning.

Ramon Santiago broke up the Pirates’ shutout bid with an RBI double in the seventh inning, but Jason Grilli and Joel Hanrahan kept the Tigers at bay through the eighth and ninth innings with Hanrahan picking up his 18th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Tigers’ infield combination of 3B Miguel Cabrera, 2B Santiago and 1B Fielder turned three double plays. ... Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4, raising his average to .346. ... The Pirates improved to 22-12 at home. ... Attendance was 37,965, Pittsburgh's fifth sellout of the year.
