Mets 6, Padres 2: Jordany Valdespin doubled in two runs and Jeremy Hefner pitched six solid innings as visiting New York beat San Diego.
Daniel Murphy reached base five times on four hits and a walk and Mike Baxter matched a franchise-record by drawing five walks as the Mets improved to 6-4 on an 11-game road trip.
Hefner (2-4) allowed one run and five hits and didn’t walk anyone to win for the first time since May 29.
New York took advantage of Edinson Volquez’s wildness with four walks during its second-inning uprising.
Josh Thole walked to force in the inning’s first run and Ruben Tejada drew a base on balls for the second run. Valdespin then finished Volquez’s night with his double.
The Padres got on the board in third on a single to right by Alexi Amarista, who had three of San Diego’s eight hits.
Thole’s infield out in the seventh gave the Mets a 5-1 lead and Ike Davis delivered a run-scoring single in the eighth.
Chase Headley hit his 14th homer in the ninth for San Diego. The Padres put two more runners on base before the Mets called upon Frank Francisco, who retired John Baker on a game-ending double play for his 19th save in 22 opportunities.
Volquez (7-8) gave up four runs and two hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. Volquez pitched at least five innings in each of his 22 previous starts.
San Diego pitchers combined for 10 walks.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The four-hit game was Murphy’s fifth of the season. … Padres OF Cameron Maybin is 3-for-29 since having a three-hit game against the Houston Astros on July 17. … Baxter tied the franchise record set by Vince Coleman, who walked five times in a 16-inning game against Pittsburgh in 1992. … Volquez leads the majors with 80 walks and had won four straight decisions before Saturday.
