Red Sox 3, Rays 2: Pinch hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia belted a two-run homer off closer Fernando Rodney in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Boston's Daniel Nava led off the rally with a walk and moved to second on Nick Punto’s sacrifice bunt before Saltalamacchia hit a 0-1 pitch to right center field for his eighth homer.
It was the first blown save of the season for Rodney (2-1), who had started with 15 straight conversions.
Rich Hill (1-0) pitched the ninth inning to get the victory
Will Middlebrooks’ single up the middle went off the glove of second baseman Sean Rodriguez and drove in David Ortiz for a 1-0 Boston lead in the sixth. One batter earlier, Rays center fielder B.J. Upton threw out Dustin Pedroia at the plate.
Upton and Matt Joyce led off the seventh with singles against Red Sox starter Josh Beckett, who had retired 11 straight before the inning. Ben Zobrist plated Upton with a sacrifice fly and Joyce scored on Luke Scott’s single for a 2-1 lead.
Beckett threw only 67 pitches in the first six innings, getting the Rays 1-2-3 in five of them and surrendering only a single to Jose Molina. He threw 24 pitches in the seventh before leaving the game.
Rays starter David Price allowed eight hits and one run over seven innings, stranding eight base runners.
