TIGERS 13, RED SOX 12 (11): Alex Avila hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning off Mark Melancon as Detroit came from behind on two occasions in the late innings to complete a three-game sweep of Boston.
Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer to tie it in the bottom of the ninth and finished with five RBIs and three runs scored for the Tigers.
The Red Sox grabbed a 12-10 lead in the top of the 11th and brought in Melancon (0-2) for the team’s second save opportunity of the afternoon. The right-hander got Brennan Boesch leading off the frame but Cabrera and Prince Fielder followed with back-to-back singles.
Cabrera advanced on a wild pitch and came in on Delmon Young’s sacrifice fly. Avila was up next and fought off a few pitches before blasting a deep fly just over the wall in right-center - his second homer.
Duane Below (2-0) recorded the final out of the 11th to earn the win.
Boston was well on its way to the victory, with closer Alfredo Aceves on the mound and a three-run lead in the ninth. But Austin Jackson and Boesch hit back-to-back singles leading off the frame and Cabrera wasted no time tying it up, driving the first pitch he saw on a line into the left field seats.
Jackson finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored and went 8-for-14 in the series.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Adrian Gonzalez gave the Red Sox the lead with his first home run and Mike Aviles and Nick Punto each drove in three. … Both starting pitchers - Clay Buchholz for Boston and Max Scherzer for Detroit - allowed seven runs and eight hits. … The teams combined for 30 hits.
