Jason Vargas pitched a six-hitter to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 6-0 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Friday.
The shutout was the third of the season for Vargas (6-5), who struck out seven, didn’t walk a batter and halted San Diego’s four-game winning streak.
Jack Cust, Adam Kennedy and Carlos Peguero had two RBIs apiece as the Mariners posted their highest run total since June 12 and ended a three-game losing streak.
Seattle struck in the first when Brendan Ryan doubled off Dustin Moseley (2-8) and scored on Kennedy’s single.
The Mariners increased the lead to 4-0 in the third when Cust drew a bases-loaded walk for the seventh time this season and Peguero followed with a two-run single.
Justin Smoak and Cust hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth for Seattle’s fifth run, and Kennedy delivered a run-scoring double in the sixth.
Chase Headley had three hits for the Padres.
Moseley gave up five runs - only two were earned because of Jason Bartlett’s error in the third – and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
