Madison Bumgarner recorded his first win and the visiting San Francisco Giants escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Thursday.
Bumgarner (1-6) allowed six hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 8 2/3 innings for the Giants, who have won 11 of their last 15 games. Bumgarner came within one out of his first career complete game.
Jerry Sands prevented a shutout when his two-out double off Bumgarner in the bottom of the ninth scored Rod Barajas. Nine of Sands’ 16 hits have been doubles.
Brian Wilson walked pinch-hitters Jay Gibbons and James Loney before retiring Jamey Carroll with the bases loaded to earn his 13th save of the season. Nate Schierholtz made a diving catch on Carroll's liner to right field to end the game.
Freddy Sanchez knocked in two runs off Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley (2-4), who gave up three runs on six hits with four walks over six innings.
The Dodgers dropped a season-high five games under .500 with the loss.
