Aaron Harang made his fifth straight quality start and top prospect Anthony Rizzo tripled in his major league debut as the San Diego Padres posted a 7-3 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Harang (7-2) gave up two runs on six hits while striking out four over six innings. Harang entered the game with a 1.63 ERA over his last four starts.
Chase Headley gave the Padres a first-inning lead with his two-run homer off Livan Hernandez (3-8). Headley has hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games.
Called up from Triple-A Tucson earlier in the day, Rizzo tripled off the center-field fence in his second major league at-bat. The first baseman was part of the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox last December.
Pinch-hitter Wilson Ramos hit his fifth home run with two outs in the ninth inning for the Nationals, who have lost three straight to the Padres.
The Padres broke the game open in the sixth inning with three runs on three straight singles and two walks. San Diego improved to 5-3 on its season-long 11-game homestand.
