Dontrelle Willis pitched and hit his way to his first victory since June 2010 as the Cincinnati Reds won 5-4 in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Willis (1-6) threw six innings of three-hit ball and belted a two-run double in the sixth inning that snapped a 3-3 tie. Willis fanned six and walked two.
Willis, the former Rookie of the Year, entered the game winless in a dozen starts on the season. His one-out double in the sixth inning followed a single by Devin Mesoraco and a double by Janish.
The Reds prevailed despite squandering an early 3-0 lead. Jay Bruce had an RBI single in the first inning. Paul Janish added a sacrifice fly and Brandon Phillips followed with a run-scoring single in the second.
The Pirates tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second. Chase d’Arnaud had a two-run triple and later scored on a single by Mike McKenry.
Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth inning for his 35th save. He allowed a run-scoring double by Neil Walker but got Pedro Alvarez to fly out to end it.
Daniel Moskos (1-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits in just a third of an inning.
