Jeff Baker's two-out, two-run double capped an eighth-inning rally as the Chicago Cubs defeated the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon.
Facing an 8-5 deficit entering the bottom of the frame, the Cubs tagged reliever Matt Guerrier (1-1) for five runs to regain control of the game. With nobody out and the bases loaded, Starlin Castro delivered a two-run single to cut the margin to one and Darwin Barney followed with an RBI fielder's choice to tie it. After Blake Hawksworth spelled Guerrier, Baker delivered a two-out, two-run double.
Jeff Samardzija (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief to pick up the win for Chicago, while Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his fifth save.
The Cubs jumped out to a 5-1 lead against Dodgers starter Ted Lilly before Los Angeles stormed back with seven unanswered runs, including home runs by Matt Kemp, Casey Blake and Rod Barajas. Andre Ethier had a sixth-inning double to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.
Neither starting pitcher fared well. Lilly lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits, while Chicago's Ryan Dempster surrendered nine hits and seven earned runs in his 5 2/3 innings.
