Neil Walker's grand slam with two out in the top of the fifth inning lifted Pittsburgh to a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.
The Cubs had grabbed a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and third innings before Walker ripped a 3-2 pitch from Ryan Dempster (0-1) over the right-field fence to put the Pirates ahead for good. Andrew McCutchen added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to chase Dempster.
Kevin Correia (1-0) got the victory for Pittsburgh, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six-plus innings of work.
Kosuke Fukudome cut the margin to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single, but Chicago could get no closer against the Pirates' bullpen. Joel Hanrahan allowed a pair of runners with one out in the ninth but struck out Marlon Byrd and got Aramis Ramirez to ground into a fielder's choice for the final out.
