Jose Reyes became the first Met to win a batting title and Miguel Batista threw a two-hitter for his first shutout since 2006 as New York defeated the visiting Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Wednesday.
The game began in strange fashion as Reyes led off with a bunt single, and promptly exited the contest with a .337 average. The home crowd jeered the move since it might have seen the star shortstop for the last time in a Mets uniform.
Milwaukee's Ryan Braun entered Wednesday's game at .335 and went 0-for-4 to finish at .332.
Mike Baxter belted his first major league home run, a two-run shot in the sixth against Reds starter Edinson Volquez (5-7) after Nick Evans put New York ahead with an RBI single in the fourth.
That was plenty of support for Batista (5-2), who didn't allow a hit after the second inning and retired 24 of the last 26 batters he faced.
