Tim Stauffer tossed seven superb innings and Jesus Guzman hit a two-run triple as the San Diego Padres posted a 3-1 home victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday.
Stauffer (8-9), who had lost three of his previous four decisions, continued his mastery of the Marlins by allowing only a run and five hits. He has a 0.69 ERA in two starts against Florida this season and a 1.69 mark in four career meetings.
San Diego gave Stauffer all the offensive support he needed in the first inning as Guzman tripled against Javier Vazquez (7-11) with one out for a 2-0 lead. Nick Hundley led off the second with a triple and scored on Logan Forsythe's sacrifice fly to increase the advantage.
Heath Bell worked a perfect ninth for his 33rd save in 36 opportunities for the Padres, who have won nine of 15.
Vazquez, who is winless in his last four starts, surrendered three runs over six innings. The veteran has allowed three earned runs or less in 11 of his last 12 outings.
John Buck belted a solo homer for Florida, which has lost 12 of 14.
