Miguel Cabrera singled in the go-ahead runs in a seven-run eighth to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 8-3 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Jhonny Peralta added a solo home run and Victor Martinez chipped in an RBI for the Tigers, who took two of three in the series to keep pace with the Cleveland Indians atop the American League Central.
Joe Saunders started for the Diamondbacks and left with a 2-1 lead after seven innings, handing it over to a bullpen that ranks near the top of the majors in save percentage. But the relief corps was not up to the task on Sunday.
Aaron Heilman (4-1) got the first two outs in the eighth but allowed two batters to reach before being replaced by David Hernandez. Magglio Ordonez walked to load the bases in front of Cabrera’s two-run single. Martinez and Peralta each followed with RBI singles before Bryan Shaw came on and presided over two more runs - all with two outs.
Al Alburquerque (5-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to grab the win.
The game started a few minutes late after a pre-game ceremony to retire legendary manager Sparky Anderson’s No. 11.
