Jack Hannahan's one-out single in the bottom of the 16th inning gave the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.
Hannahan, who hit solo homers in the second and sixth innings, lined a 1-1 pitch from Josh Outman (3-4) into right field to score pinch-runner Cord Phelps, who barely beat a strong throw from David DeJesus with a headfirst slide.
Jim Thome started the rally with a one-out single and pinch-runner Phelps moved to second on Carlos Santana's single.
The win moved the Indians into second place in the American League Central, 5 1/2 games behind Detroit.
The Indians have won five of six while the Athletics have lost five straight. The teams combined for 34 strikeouts.
Frank Herrmann (4-0) pitched four scoreless innings for the win.
Kurt Suzuki hit a solo home run with one out in the fourth to give Oakland a 3-2 lead.
Oakland's Rich Harden allowed three runs in six innings. Athletics relievers retired 24 straight batters before Jason Donald doubled to lead off the 15th.
Ubaldo Jimenez allowed a run in the second, third and fourth, but retired the last seven hitters he faced, including all six of his strikeouts. He allowed six hits in six innings.
