After Matsui opened the scoring in the third with an RBI double, the Athletics registered their biggest inning of the season in the fourth against James Shields (9-9), who yielded 10 runs in four innings after surrendering only nine over his previous four starts.
Matsui launched a three-run homer, Sweeney belted a two-run shot and Scott Sizemore plated two with a triple as Oakland set a season high with seven hits in the inning. Matsui added a run-scoring single in the fifth for his 16th RBI in his last nine games.
Weeks hit an RBI triple and scored in the fifth before lifting a sacrifice fly an inning later for a 13-0 cushion.
Oakland starter Trevor Cahill (9-9), who had received two runs of support or less in each of his previous nine starts, rebounded from the worst outing of his career. The 23-year old allowed four singles over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to snap his four-game losing streak.
Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer during a four-run ninth for the Rays, who have lost seven of eight on the road and six of seven overall.
