Dan Haren pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and Alberto Callaspo homered as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took advantage of the struggling Tampa Bay Rays, 5-1, on Wednesday to sweep a two-game set.

Bobby Abreu and Jeff Mathis each doubled in a run and rookie Mark Trumbo totaled three hits and an RBI for the Angels, who evened their record at 3-3.

The struggles at the plate continued for the Rays, who managed four hits on Wednesday and have now totaled seven runs in five games.

Haren (1-0) was in control from the beginning, retiring the first eight batters he faced and allowing one run on four hits while striking out six. The righthander has not issued a walk in 14 innings in 2011.

Rookie Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) got the start for Tampa Bay and was nearly as impressive, striking out 10 in 5 2/3 frames. He struck out the side in the first but not before issuing a walk and Abreu’s RBI double to give Los Angeles the early lead.

Callaspo increased it to 2-0 in the fourth with a solo blast.

B.J. Upton hit his second home run for the Rays.
