Rookie Hank Conger hit his first major league home run and Torii Hunter drove in a pair as the visiting Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim held off the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-3, on Tuesday.
Alberto Callaspo added a two-run single and Jered Weaver turned in another strong start for the Angels (2-3), who bounced back after dropping three straight to the Kansas City Royals.
The Rays (0-4), who were swept at home by the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend, matched their run total from the first three games but still did not get much from the middle of the order. Manny Ramirez finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
The Angels got three in the first when Hunter singled in a run and Callaspo delivered a two-run single later in the frame. Conger homered off Tampa Bay starter Jeff Niemann in the second.
Weaver (2-0) had no trouble making that hold up, as the righthander struck out six while allowing one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Rookie Jordan Walden worked a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Sean Rodriguez and B.J. Upton homered for Tampa Bay, which had just five hits. Niemann allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings.
