Bobby Abreu hit a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run rally in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Los Angeles Angels produced a 9-8 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
Adam Jones’ tiebreaking single in the top of the 12th and a throwing error by Torii Hunter had given Baltimore a two-run lead before Los Angeles rallied for its third straight victory. The Angels are now five games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
Josh Bell’s throwing error on Hank Conger’s sacrifice bunt allowed Erick Aybar to score the inning’s first run and Kevin Gregg (0-2) walked Alberto Callaspo with the bases loaded to force in the second.
Lefthander Troy Patton entered with none out and allowed Abreu’s deep fly that scored pinch-runner Vernon Wells as the Angels handed the Orioles their fourth consecutive loss.
Jones had four hits and his two-out single to right field off Fernando Rodney (3-5) drove in Bell in the top of the 12th. J.J. Hardy also scored when Hunter’s errant throw got past Conger.
Jones hit his 22nd homer earlier in the contest for Baltimore, which tied the score at 6-6 in the eighth on Matt Wieters’ single.
Abreu had three RBIs, including a two-run double in Los Angeles’ four-run third inning.
Peter Bourjos homered for the Angels.
