The Boston Red Sox hit three more home runs to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 8-6 at Fenway Park on Sunday afternoon and head into the All-Star break riding a six-game winning streak.
Both teams started youngsters on the mound and neither fared well. Boston’s Kyle Weiland was making his major league debut and he allowed six runs, all in the second inning. Baltimore’s Mitch Atkins made just his second major league start but lasted just 1 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs on seven hits as Boston got homers from Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis in the second to erase a 6-2 deficit.
Tensions were high two days after the teams were involved in a
bench-clearing brawl. Weiland was ejected after hitting Vlad
Guerrero with a pitch in the fifth inning. Manager Terry Francona was
also automatically ejected. In the sixth inning, Mike Gonzalez threw a
pitch behind David Ortiz. Gonzalez and Baltimore manager Buck Showalter
were ejected.
Boston took the lead for good in the fourth inning when David Ortiz walked with the bases loaded to snap a 6-6 tie. Jacoby Ellsbury added an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Both Guerrero and Mark Reynolds were hit in the hand by Weiland and left the game with injuries.
Alfredo Aceves (4-1) got the win in relief for Boston pitching three perfect innings. He got out of a first and third jam with no outs in the fifth when Weiland was ejected. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth inning for his 20th save.
Derrek Lee hit his ninth homer for Baltimore, a two-shot in the second inning. The Orioles also had four RBI singles in the frame.
Jeremy Guthrie (3-12) got the loss for Baltimore which has lost seven straight.
