J.D. Drew’s two-out single scored Carl Crawford from second base with the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning as the Boston Red Sox trimmed the Oakland Athletics 9-8 in a marathon contest at Fenway Park on Saturday.

Alfredo Aceves (3-1) got the win by pitching four innings of relief. Guillermo Moscoso (2-1) took the loss for the A’s, who have lost five straight.

Adrian Gonzalez hit his 11th homer, Crawford had four hits and three RBIs and Jacoby Ellsbury added four hits.

Boston entered the ninth inning with a 7-3 lead but things quickly fell apart with closer Jonathan Papelbon on the mound.

Oakland batted around in the inning and scored four times to the tie the game. The rally was fueled by a crucial error on an apparent double-play ball hit by Coco Crisp.

The ball went through Dustin Pedroia’s legs to score one run. Cliff Pennington then followed with a double and Conor Jackson tied the game with a two-run single down the left field line.

Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek was ejected for arguing balls and strikes calls in the inning and, after Jackson’s hit, Papelbon was also ejected.

Oakland took an 8-7 lead in the 11th inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Sweeney, but Boston tied the game on back-to-back doubles by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ellsbury with two outs.

Josh Beckett, the league’s leader in ERA entering the ballgame, stood to get the win after allowing three runs in six innings but the bullpen blew it.
