Sam Fuld and Johnny Damon both homered and combined for seven hits as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays awoke from their offensive slumber and walloped the Boston Red Sox 16-5 on Monday night.
The Rays (2-8) blew the game open early with six runs in the second inning off Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2). John Jaso and Reid Brignac had two-run hits, and Fuld capped the barrage with a two-run homer.
Fuld missed hitting for the cycle by a single. He also had two doubles and a triple as Tampa Bay pounded out 20 hits.
Damon homered in the first off Matsuzaka, who allowed eight hits, two walks, and seven runs in two-plus innings and left to a chorus of boos.
Boston (2-8) got a home run from Jacoby Ellsbury, his second of the season.
Jeremy Hellickson (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
