Jonathon Niese threw a one-hitter in leading the New York Mets to a 3-0 win and a doubleheader split with the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
In his second start since coming off the disabled list from a hamstring injury, Niese (3-2) was dominant in allowing only a double by Chris Denorfia to lead off the third inning.
Niese didn't issue a walk and struck out six batters on 108 pitches.
The Mets built their lead early against Padres starter Jon Garland. Jeff Francoeur opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second and New York added two in the third on an RBI groundout by David Wright and an RBI single by Ike Davis.
Garland (6-4) allowed the three runs on eight hits over six innings.
San Diego posted a 4-2 victory in Thursday’s opener of the doubleheader.
