Brad Penny pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and Albert Pujols homered as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the host San Francisco Giants 2-0 to salvage the final game of a three-game series.
Penny (3-0) gave up eight hits and didn’t walk anyone before being removed after Pedro Sandoval singled with two out in the eighth. Jason Motte got the final out of the inning and Ryan Franklin pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
St. Louis lost the first two games while losing a series for the first time this season.
Pujols went 3-for-4 and hit his seventh homer of the season in the first inning against San Francisco starter Matt Cain.
The Cardinals added a fourth-inning run when Colby Rasmus doubled, moved to a third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Yadier Molina’s sacrifice fly to center.
Cain (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits in five innings.
Pedro Sandoval and Andres Torres each went 3-for-4 for San Francisco.
