David Eckstein had a two-run single in the second inning and reached base five times Tuesday night to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory over the host San Francisco Giants.
Eckstein singled in Jerry Hairston Jr. and Oscar Salazar in the second inning to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. He singled twice and walked three times.
Yorvit Torrealba added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning for the Padres.
The victory increased San Diego’s lead over San Francisco to 1 ½ games in the National League West. The Padres (20-12) are tied with Philadelphia for the NL’s best record.
Reliever Ryan Webb (1-1) recorded the victory and Heath Bell notched his ninth save in 11 opportunities.
Aubrey Huff singled in a run in the third inning and scored on Juan Uribe’s fifth-inning triple for the Giants(18-13).
San Francisco starter Barry Zito (5-1) had his roughest outing of the season and lasted just five innings. Zito allowed three runs on six hits and seven walks. He struck out two.
Padres starter Wade LeBlanc pitched just 4 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs and six hits.
