Jon Garland pitched seven solid innings and the San Diego Padres moved into sole possession of first place in the National League West with a 5-2 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
The Padres (9-6) have won six consecutive games and swept the three-game series from San Francisco. The Giants have lost four straight.
Adrian Gonzalez homered in the bottom of the first inning and Nick Hundley hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Padres a 4-1 lead.
Garland (1-2) allowed one run and six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
San Francisco’s lone run off Garland came on an infield groundout in the fifth inning. The right-hander recorded 14 groundball outs.
Pablo Sandoval hit a ninth-inning homer for the Giants, who scored four total runs in the series.
San Francisco starter Todd Wellemeyer (0-3) was charged with two runs on three hits in four innings.
