Garrett Jones drove in three runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals were officially eliminated from National League Central title considerations earlier in the evening when the Cincinnati Reds beat the Houston Astros 3-2.
Jones hit a two-run homer in the first off St. Louis starter Jeff Suppan (2-8) to cap a three-run uprising then singled home Andrew McCutchen in the sixth for a 4-2 Pirates lead. John Bowker’s bases-loaded double in the eighth pushed the edge to 7-2.
Jones had three hits while McCutchen had a hit, drew two walks and scored twice for Pittsburgh, which won for just the third time in its last 25 road contests.
Pittsburgh is 16-60 away from PNC Park this season. The fewest road wins in a season since the schedule increased to 162 games is 17 by the New York Mets in 1963.
Pirates starter Brian Burres (4-4) allowed just two runs – one earned – and four hits in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Matt Pagnozzi touched him for his first major league homer in the second inning.
Suppan was charged with five runs – four earned – and five hits in 5 1/3 innings as he dropped to 16-4 all-time against his former club.
