The Stephen Strasburg era has finally begun.

The Washington Nationals’ pitching prospect made his much-anticipated major-league debut Tuesday night and dominated opposing hitters with 14 strikeouts en route to an 5-2 Washington victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Strasburg has been one of the most hyped rookies in major league history. He didn’t disappoint by going seven innings while allowing four hits and no walks and hitting 100 mph on the radar gun, showing why Washington management is giddy about the 21 year old. Strasburg (1-0) finished his night by striking out the side in the seventh inning, reaching 99 mph on his final pitch of the game.

His only blemish was a two-run homer to Delwyn Young in the fourth inning.

Strasburg was on the hook for the loss until he got some run support in the sixth inning. Adam Dunn turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead and then Josh Willingham hit a solo shot immediately after, knocking Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens out of the game and giving Washington a lead they’d never relinquish.

Tyler Clippard worked a scoreless eighth and Matt Capps pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save of the season.

Karstens (1-2) finished his day allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings.
