Aubrey Huff and Matt Downs homered and Todd Wellmeyer pitched seven solid innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
Huff and Downs both homered in the second inning to give the Giants a 2-1 lead and start them on their way to their fourth win in five games.
Wellmeyer (1-3) entered the game with an 8.16 earned-run average but held the Phillies to two runs and three hits. He retired 11 consecutive hitters before walking Carlos Ruiz to start the eighth.
Wellmeyer was relieved by Dan Runzler, who allowed a run-scoring single to Ben Francisco later in the inning.
The Giants took a 4-1 lead in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Edgar Renteria and Pablo Sandoval. The same combination was at work in the seventh as both Renteria and Sandoval again had RBI-singles.
Renteria had three of San Francisco’s 12 hits.
Jamie Moyer (2-2) gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings as the Phillies lost their third consecutive game and fell out of first place in the National League East.
