Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday.
Gonzalez belted an opposite-field blast over the wall in left against Mets reliever Raul Valdez (2-2). The homer was Gonzalez’s fourth hit of the game.
San Diego was one out away from losing the game until David Eckstein singled home Tony Gwynn against Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth.
Gonzalez followed with a double down the left-field line but Eckstein was thrown out at the plate.
Ryan Webb (2-1) pitched two shutout innings of relief for the victory.
Jeff Francoeur had a run-scoring single in the fourth for New York.
Johan Santana pitched seven shutout innings but received a no-decision for the fifth time in his last six starts. Santana scattered five hits and five walks.
Padres starter Clayton Richard pitched six innings and gave up one run and four hits. He struck out five and walked four.
