Ruben Tejada hit a two-run double off Milwaukee closer John Axford in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the New York Mets to a 4-3 win over the Brewers on Tuesday at Citi Field.
Axford (8-2) struck out David Wright to end the eighth and strand the tying run at second, but he couldn't work out of another jam in the ninth. Ike Davis led off the inning with a double, Josh Thole singled one batter later and Tejada doubled to left-center to score Davis and pinch-runner Luis Castillo.
Tejada had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
Milwaukee blew two leads in this game. A Lorenzo Cain double in the fourth and Corey Hart homer in the sixth stoked the Brewers to a 2-0 lead, but Wright hit a two-run homer off Brewers starter Randy Wolf in the sixth to even the score. Prince Fielder’s RBI groundout in the eighth staked Milwaukee to another lead, but again the team could not make it stand.
Wolf gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings and was in line to win his third consecutive start before the ninth-inning rally.
Elmer Dessens (4-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.
