Ted Lilly retired the final 20 batters he faced in his Los Angeles debut and Russell Martin delivered a two-run double as the host Dodgers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
Lilly gave up two hits in the first inning – a homer to Miguel Tejada and a single to Adrian Gonzalez – before retiring every other Padre he faced until leaving after seven innings.
Lilly (4-8) struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in his first start since the Dodgers acquired him from the Chicago Cubs.
Hong-Chih Kuo pitched the eighth and Jonathan Broxton worked out of a ninth-inning jam by getting Ryan Ludwick to bounce into a game-ending double play with runners on first and second. The save was Broxton’s 21st of the season.
Matt Kemp and Casey Blake both walked in the second and scored on Martin’s one-out double to right-center field.
San Diego ace Mat Latos (11-5) had his streak of six straight victories snapped despite allowing just two runs and four hits in six innings. Latos struck out six and walked two.
Los Angeles won despite having just five hits. San Diego was held to three.
