Chase Headley went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Will Venable drove in a career-high four runs to help the San Diego Padres to a 10-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.
Headley and Venable each hit three-run homers as San Diego increased its first-place lead to two games over idle San Francisco.
Headley’s sixth-inning blast pushed the Padres ahead 10-2 after Venable’s fourth-inning shot broke a scoreless tie. Miguel Tejada delivered a two-run single in the fourth to cap a five-run inning and Yorvit Torrealba went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Clayton Richard (9-5) won for San Diego despite giving up four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Matt Kemp had a career-high five hits in five at-bats with a homer and three RBIs for the Dodgers, who had 14 hits.
The Dodgers finished the first inning with three consecutive singles but failed to score when James Loney was thrown out at third by San Diego center fielder Chris Denorfia before Kemp crossed home plate. Los Angeles then began the second inning with back-to-back singles for its fifth straight hit without scoring.
Los Angeles starter Hiroki Kuroda (8-10) gave up five runs – four earned – and seven hits in four innings.
