Andre Ethier delivered a two-run pinch-hit single and three Los Angeles pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the visiting Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Ethier was a late scratch due to an upset stomach but was called on after the Padres intentionally walked Russell Martin to load the bases in the seventh. He came through with a two-run single to center for the game’s only runs.
Chad Billingsley (9-5) gave up three hits in six innings before being hit for by Ethier. Billingsley struck out four and walked two.
Hong-Chih Kuo struck out five batters in two innings and Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save.
Padres starter Jon Garland (9-7) gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
All three of San Diego’s hits off Billingsley came in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with none out. But Billingsley retired Will Venable on a groundball forceout at the plate, Tony Gwynn Jr. on a short flyout and struck out Everth Cabrera.
