Andres Torres hit a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to lift the San Francisco Giants to a wild 7-5 victory over the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
Immediately preceding Torres’ decisive hit with the bases loaded, Giants manager Bruce Bochy successfully contended that acting Dodgers manager Don Mattingly made two visits to the mound. That forced the removal of Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton (3-2) with the bases loaded and one out.
Replays showed Mattingly leaving the mound area and then turning around to field a question from first baseman James Loney and returning to the mound.
Mattingly was acting manager because Joe Torre had been ejected earlier in the game. Torre and starter Clayton Kershaw (two earned runs in six-plus innings) were ejected after Kershaw hit Aaron Rowand to start the seventh. Both benches had been warned earlier in the contest.
George Sherrill replaced Broxton and allowed Torres’ double. Buster Posey added a run-scoring single off Travis Schlichting later in the ninth to help send the Dodgers to their sixth consecutive loss.
Santiago Casilla (3-2) got the win for the Giants and Jeremy Affeldt pitched the ninth for his third save.
Los Angeles led 5-1 after three innings against San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum. Xavier Paul’s run-scoring double and Andre Ethier’s two-run homer resulted in a three-run first inning, while Blake DeWitt (single) and Casey Blake (double) had run-scoring hits in the third.
San Francisco scored three times in the sixth with Pablo Sandoval’s two-run double cutting the Los Angeles lead to 5-4.
Lincecum lasted just 4 2/3 innings and gave up five runs and seven hits.
