Matt Holliday singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a four-game sweep Sunday with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Trailing 4-0 through 7 1/2 innings, the Cardinals erupted for three runs in the eighth and added two more off Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton (3-1) in the ninth.
Yadier Molina began the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Brendan Ryan. After Felipe Lopez flied out, Jon Jay drew a walk and rookie Allen Craig followed with a single to center that brought home Molina with the tying run.
Holliday capped the rally with a single to right field as the Cardinals won their fifth straight game. The victory, combined with Cincinnati's 1-0 loss to Colorado, moved St. Louis past the Reds and into sole possession of top spot in the National League Central.
Ryan Franklin (4-1) earned the victory with an inning of scoreless relief. Craig finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in place of Albert Pujols, who was given the afternoon on but grounded out in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter.
Jeff Suppan had his strongest outing in a St. Louis uniform, scattering a run on five hits over six innings. Los Angeles counterpart Vicente Padilla allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings, but issued five walks. He also had an RBI double that opened the scoring in the fifth inning.
The Dodgers have lost 21 of their last 25 regular-season games in St. Louis dating back to 2004.
