San Diego starter Wade LeBlanc waited until the sixth inning to surrender his first hit, but was it ever costly.
Russell Martin’s single in the sixth broke LeBlanc’s no-hit bid and scored Jamey Carroll to help the Dodgers beat the Padres 1-0 in an old-fashioned pitching duel at Petco Park.
LeBlanc (2-1) was dominant, going 7 innings and yielding just one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Unfortunately for LeBlanc Los Angeles starter Chad Billingsley (4-2) was just a little better. Billingsley gave up no runs by scattering four hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings. He also struck out six.
The Dodgers managed to plate a run when Jamey Carroll led off the sixth with a walk. Billingsley sacrificed Carroll to second then Martin brought him around with a single.
Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
San Diego’s only real threat came in the second inning. Yorvit Torrealba singled then Will Venable walked to put runners on first and second with one out. But Billingsley struck out Kyle Blanks then got Tony Gwynn Jr. to ground out.
