Ryan Doumit hit a two-run triple in the first inning and three Pittsburgh pitchers made it hold up as the Pirates blanked the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, on Thursday.
Doumit’s two-out shot to center field, which was misplayed by Matt Kemp, was the Pirates’ only hit in the opening inning. Lastings Milledge and Andy LaRoche walked to start the game and both scored on the play.
Left-hander Brian Burres (1-1) pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings for his first win since he was with Baltimore in 2008. Burres, who brought a 9.31 earned-run average into the contest, allowed just four hits.
Jack Taschner followed with 2 2/3 perfect innings and Evan Meek pitched a perfect ninth for his first major-league save.
The Dodgers lost their fifth consecutive game and are in last place in the National League West, six games behind the first-place San Diego Padres.
Clayton Kershaw (1-1) went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs and three hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
