Jon Garland gave the San Diego Padres another reminder of why they signed him in the offseason, winning his second consecutive start as the Padres posted a 4-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.

Garland (2-2) only ran into major trouble in the sixth, allowing back-to-back singles to Cameron Maybin and Chris Coghlan to start the frame, but he limited the damage by getting Hanley Ramirez to ground into a double play.

Other than that, it was smooth sailing for the 30-year-old right-hander, who struck out 10 and allowed only one run on three hits over six innings. In his past three starts, Garland has surrendered a total of two earned runs, lowering his ERA to 2.57.

The Padres led 2-1 when Garland left the mound after the sixth, but extended it to 4-1 as Jerry Hairston Jr. and Gonzalez added RBI singles in the seventh.

Luke Gregerson and Mike Adams worked scoreless innings of relief and handed the ball over to closer Heath Bell, who earned his fifth save after stranding a pair of runners.

Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez (1-2) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

The game was delayed about 10 minutes in the top of the seventh when home plate umpire Jerry Crawford was hit with a foul tip off the bat of Will Venable. Second-base umpire Phil Cuzzi replaced Crawford behind the plate for the remainder of the game.
