Chase Headley’s two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.
Lance Zawadzki drew a leadoff walk against Franklin Morales (0-3) and was sacrificed to second by Tony Gwynn Jr. After David Eckstein flew out, Adrian Gonzalez was walked intentionally before Headley singled to right center to score Zawadzki with the decisive run.
Heath Bell (2-0) recorded the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Padres tied the game in the eighth when Will Venable tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Hairston Jr.
Colorado took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Pitcher Greg Smith led off with a double and scored on Carlos Gonzalez’s one-out double. Todd Helton followed with a run-scoring single.
San Diego scored in the fourth when Headley singled and was tripled in by Hairston Jr.
Padres starter Wade LeBlanc pitched well for the fourth consecutive outing, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings.
Smith pitched five innings for the Rockies and allowed one run and four hits.
