Chris Heisey homered and drove in four in support of Homer Bailey as the Cincinnati Reds clinched at least a tie of the National League Central with a 12-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Brandon Phillips added a two-run blast and Joey Votto chipped in a solo shot for the Reds, who lowered their magic number to one for clinching the NL Central outright.
Votto hit a solo homer in the first to give Cincinnati an early lead but the Padres, who are locked in a battle for both the NL West and the NL wild card, battled back with solo shots from Yorvit Torrealba and Adrian Gonzalez in the second.
The Reds took the lead for good in the fourth when Clayton Richard (13-9) walked Votto to lead off the frame and surrendered a ground-rule double to Jonny Gomes before intentionally walking Phillips. Heisey came up next and made Richard pay, clearing the bases with a double to left.
Bailey (4-3) lasted seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out six. The right-hander snapped a six-start winless streak with the victory.
Phillips hit a two-run homer - his 17th - in the sixth and Heisey added a solo home run during a six-run rally in the eighth to put it out of reach.
