Jonny Gomes and Drew Sutton each had four RBIs, Brandon Phillips knocked in three more and Sam LeCure had an effective major-league debut to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 15-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday.
Gomes had a two-run home run in the third inning and Phillips had a solo shot in the first as the Reds raced to an 8-2 lead after four innings. Sutton capped a six-run sixth inning with his first home run of the season, a grand slam that made it 14-2.
All the run support was plenty for LeCure (1-0), who won his debut by allowing two runs and six hits in six innings. He yielded four walks and struck out five before turning it over to the bullpen for mop-up duty.
Wandy Rodriguez (2-7) was unable to get out of the fourth inning and took the loss. He surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Hunter Pence was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Houston, which dropped to 16-32 for the first time in franchise history.
