Johnny Cueto threw a one-hitter and the Cincinnati Reds (18-15) collected 15 hits to whitewash the Pittsburgh Pirates (14-19) 9-0 Tuesday night at PNC Park.
Cueto (2-1) allowed the Pirates to reach base only twice – once in the third inning when Ronny Cedeno singled to left and again in the sixth when Cedeno was hit by a pitch – to earn the first complete game of his three-year career.
The 24-year-old right-hander fanned eight and never lost velocity off of his fastball, reaching 94 miles per hour in the bottom of the ninth.
Cincinnati collected three runs in six innings off struggling Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (1-6) then broke open the game by scoring six runs off the Bucs’ bullpen.
Key blows included Jay Bruce’s two-run single off Jack Taschner with one out in the seventh inning and Chris Heisey’s first major league home run. The two-run belt just inside the left-field foul pole off of Jeff Karstens was part of a four-run eighth inning for the Reds.
Heisey collected his first major league hit in the first inning on an infield single and finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs in the leadoff spot of the Cincinnati batting order.
