Pinch-hitter Laynce Nix hit a one-out homer in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 3-2 win over the New York Mets in the first of the three-game series Monday night.
It marked the eighth time this season that the Reds had won a game in their final at-bat.
Nix, who had been struggling and was hitting only .176 when he stepped to the plate, took a low fastball from Mets reliever Manny Acosta (1-1) and placed it over the right-field wall, just barely over the outstretched arms of Jeff Francouer.
Nix’s blast made a winning pitcher out of reliever Nick Masset (3-1), who pitched two solid innings in relief, recording three strikeouts.
Drew Stubbs hit a solo homer in the second inning off Mets starter Oliver Perez, who went six innings and allowed two earned runs.
Francouer and Jose Reyes drove in runs for New York, which lost for the third straight time after winning eight in a row.
