Adam Wainwright threw six strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals gave him all the run supported he needed early to pick up his 20th win of the season with a 7-1 decision over the Chicago Cubs.
Wainwright (20-11) allowed six hits and a solo home run to Aramis Ramirez in the second inning while striking out seven and walking one. It was his fifth straight win at Wrigley Field.
St. Louis’ Allen Craig hit a three-run homer in the first inning, which was his third of the year, to get the Cards on the board. He also added an RBI groundout in the third, finishing the day 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Wainwright chipped in with an RBI double of his own.
Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny (7-9) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking five batters. Four Chicago pitchers followed him in relief, allowing just two more hits the rest of the way.
Chicago was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on base.
