Randy Wells pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and Kosuke Fukudome hit a solo home run as the Chicago Cubs posted a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Koyie Hill doubled and scored a run for the Cubs (69-82), who have won seven of their last eight games.
Wells (8-13) won for the third time in four decisions after allowing six hits and walking one while striking out six. The 28-year-old improved to 4-8 in 18 starts at home this year.
Fukudome gave Wells all the support he needed in the third, leading off the inning with his 13th homer of the season. Chicago doubled the advantage in the fifth as Hill opened the frame with a double, went to third on a wild pitch by Jonathan Sanchez and scored on catcher Buster Posey's throwing error.
Wells worked out of jams in each of the first two innings. San Francisco (85-67) put runners on the corners with one out in the first, but Wells struck out Posey and Pat Burrell to escape unscathed.
Jose Guillen led off the second with a double and one out later advanced to third on Juan Uribe's flyout but was stranded as Wells retired Sanchez on a fly ball.
Cody Ross doubled in the eighth with one on and two outs, ending the night for Wells. Carlos Marmol came on and struck out Freddy Sanchez, then fanned three more in the ninth for his 34th save in 39 chances.
Jonathan Sanchez (11-9) lost for the first time in seven starts, surrendering two runs - one earned - four hits in 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander, who walked two and struck out six, has yielded just nine earned runs over his last 45 frames.
Freddy Sanchez collected two hits for the Giants, who have scored two runs or less in nine of their last 13 contests.
